Hazel Plant Supports

$38.00 USD

Twenty coppiced hazel rods, cut from a managed coppice, for peas, beans and anything that flops. Hazel is springy enough to bend into a hoop without snapping and lasts two or three seasons in the ground, after which it goes on the compost heap rather than into a bin.

  • Springy enough to bend into a hoop without snapping
  • Two or three seasons, then it composts
  • From a managed coppice, which is how hazel woods stay alive

The material
Coppiced hazel, cut in winter from a rotation-managed coppice. Coppicing is a harvest that keeps the stool alive and the woodland floor lit, and hazel that is not cut eventually shades itself out.
Use
Push them in a good foot deep and they will hold a runner bean in wind. At the end of a season, snap and compost anything that has gone soft at ground level; the rest will do another year.
